International Day of Education 2026
In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education. This global observance serves as a powerful reminder that education is not merely a tool for individual advancement, but a fundamental pillar for fostering peace and sustainable development.
At the Judicial Education Institute of Trinidad and Tobago (JEITT), we recognize that a robust, fair, and efficient legal system is the bedrock of a stable society. As we mark this day in 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to our core mission:
“To promote excellence in the administration of justice in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through continuous training and development of Judges, other judicial officers and non-judicial staff attached to the Judiciary.”
Our role extends beyond the walls of a training room or the confines of a seminar. Education within the Judiciary is a catalyst for societal transformation. By promoting inclusive, accessible and equitable quality education, the JEITT acts as an agent of change. We understand that to build a peaceful, just, and inclusive society, those who administer justice must be empowered with the knowledge and empathy required to serve a diverse public.
Driven by our vision of “Transformation through Education,” the JEITT facilitates the objective of the Judiciary becoming a high-performing, professional organisation. It is through this strategic focus on education that we empower judges and judicial officers to navigate evolving legal landscapes, technological shifts, and social changes, directly fostering a justice system that is both resilient and responsive to the needs of our citizens.
This observance also aligns with the principles of the Latimer House Guidelines, which underscore the vital role of continuous judicial education in safeguarding judicial independence—reminding us on this International Day of Education that a well-educated judiciary is essential to the preservation of the rule of law and democratic governance.
The JEITT’s approach is rooted in the tenets of Andragogy (Adult Education) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD). We recognize that our learners are experienced professionals. Therefore, the methodology focuses on:
- Relevance: Aligning training with the practical challenges of the courtroom and administrative office.
- Self-Direction: Encouraging a culture of lifelong learning and personal accountability.
- Transformative Learning: Shifting perspectives to ensure the Judiciary remains a beacon of inclusivity and equity.
As we celebrate International Day of Education 2026, let us reflect on the profound impact of our collective growth. When we invest in our own development, we are investing in the quality of justice delivered to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
By prioritizing education, we do more than sharpen our skills; we strengthen the very fabric of our democracy. We are not just participants in a system; we are the architects of a more peaceful, just, and inclusive society.
Thank you for your continued dedication to excellence through learning.
